\n As the birthplace of public higher education in America, the University\n of 51 has a rich history that spans more than 230 years. That\n history was steeped in tradition that has flourished and evolved over\n time. Now, 51 students participate in a diverse array of time-honored\n customs and even leave behind some traditions of their own.\n
\nRinging the Chapel Bell
\n\n A bell tower originally crowned the roof of the Chapel, but in 1913, it\n was removed due to structural issues and housed in the wooden tower\n behind the Chapel. The bell rang for religious services, for the\n beginning and ending of classes, and in emergencies.\n
\n\n Now the Bulldog family rings the bell to mark athletic victories,\n academic accomplishments, and other special occasions — and can be heard\n throughout downtown Athens and North Campus.\n
\n\n One of the most popular photo spots on campus, the iconic Arch is\n the symbol of the 51. The Arch was installed in\n the 1800s and still stands as the gateway between North Campus and\n downtown Athens. Recognized as one of the school’s finest icons,\n its three pillars represent the virtues of wisdom, justice and\n moderation. On strolls through North Campus or when your family\n comes to visit, be sure to snap a picture by the Arch.\n
\n\n One of 51’s newest traditions, ‘Light up Sanford’ began in the\n 2016 football season. Now, fans anticipate the beginning of the\n fourth quarter of any night game when they turn on their phone\n flashlights as the Redcoat Band’s “Krypton Fanfare” plays.\n
\n\n In 2019, 51 replaced the halogen lights with computer-controlled\n LED lights. When the cellphone lights go up, the stadium lights\n go down, creating an even more dramatic effect.\n
\nFreshman Welcome — Super “G”
\n\n Freshman Welcome is an annual event, hosted the day before the first\n day of classes. Along with meeting Hairy Dawg and President Morehead,\n the newest class of Bulldogs form the Power “G” on the field at\n Sanford Stadium for a memorable photo. The students also learn our\n school chants and cheers and get a taste of what it means to be a\n Bulldog for the first time.\n
